class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Mizuhiki Lessons at Local Schools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toward the New Year season, I held workshops for students in the special education classes and ninth graders at elementary and junior high schools in Suginami, Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-39d712fb\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns has-2-columns has-desktop-twoOne-layout has-tablet-equal-layout has-mobile-collapsedRows-layout has-vertical-unset\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-columns-overlay\"><\/div><div class=\"innerblocks-wrap\">\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-6a8bdd91\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<h3 id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-ffa4290b\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-ffa4290b\">Special Education Classes <br>\u2014\u2014 Let\u2019s Make a Snake with Mizuhiki<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For students in the special education classes, ranging from first to sixth grade, I began by introducing what Mizuhiki is. Students then learned how to make the basic <em>Awaji <\/em>knot, shaping it into a snake inspired by this year\u2019s zodiac animal. Older students also took on the challenge of creating the more intricate <em>Ume <\/em>knot. The results were outstanding, with many unique and creative pieces brought to life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column-9fbeaaca\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-column\">\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1080\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1440 \/ 1080;\" width=\"1440\" autoplay loop src=\"https:\/\/mizuhikigloballinks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/no-audio-Made-with-Clipchamp.mp4\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-b9baa245\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading wp-block-themeisle-blocks-advanced-heading-b9baa245\">Ninth Graders \u2014\u2014 Mizuhiki for Japanese Gift Envelopes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For three ninth-grade classes, we conducted special lessons aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture. Students first learned the proper etiquette for using and presenting ceremonial envelopes (<em>Shugi-bukuro<\/em>, \u795d\u5100\u888b) commonly used for weddings and other formal occasions. This was followed by a brief discussion of Mizuhiki\u2019s history and its role in Japanese industry. Students then crafted their own Mizuhiki decorations, learning both the <em>Awaji <\/em>and <em>Ume <\/em>knots, and attached them to envelopes. Through this hands-on experience, I hope they gained a deeper understanding of Mizuhiki\u2019s charm and cultural significance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every time I work with children, I\u2019m amazed by their focus and creativity. Their imaginative approach often inspires me to think more flexibly. I hope this workshop sparked their interest in Japanese traditions, even just a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div
