Living abroad gave me a renewed appreciation for Japanese culture. It also led me to realize that communication goes far beyond words. Just as language expresses thoughts and emotions, traditional crafts can tell stories, convey values, and create human connections across cultures. In many ways, I see mizuhiki as another language—one that speaks through form, color, tradition, and the simple act of tying a knot.

Since 2018, I have introduced mizuhiki through workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs in both Japan and the United States. I enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds, creating opportunities to experience Japanese culture through making. I also develop programs that encourage creativity, mindfulness, and cognitive engagement for children and older adults.

For me, the beauty of mizuhiki is found not only in the finished piece, but also in the time spent creating it.

Sometimes that time is filled with conversation and laughter shared with others. At other times, it becomes a quiet moment to slow down, focus inward, and express yourself through color, form, and each carefully tied knot.

I love the gentle feeling of mizuhiki cords naturally resting alongside one another, the richness of their changing colors, and the quiet satisfaction of watching a design gradually take shape in your own hands.

Most of all, I treasure the moment when someone who is tying mizuhiki for the first time suddenly pauses and says, “Ah… now I understand.” If I can share that moment of discovery with someone, it reminds me why I continue to do this work.

東京とニューヨークを拠点に水引×彩りコーディネーターをしているSatoiです。

日本の伝統工芸である水引を現代の暮らしに取り入れ、ファッションやインテリア、日常の空間にさりげなく和のエッセンスを添える作品を創作しています。

水引に出会う前は日本語学を学び、放送業界での取材活動において思考や共感をどのように丁寧に伝えコミュニケーションを紡いでいくか、そんな言語を通しての表現を考える日々を送っていました。海外生活を通し、日本らしさを “見せて魅せる” 視覚表現に惹かれるようになり、2018年からは日本とアメリカの学校やコミュニティスペース、企業の文化交流イベントなど、多くの方に水引の魅力を伝える活動をさせていただいています。

水引を結ぶ時間は、仲間と楽しく会話を弾ませる賑やかな楽しいひと時にも、静かな空間で自分の心と向き合い、色や形に想いを込めるひと時にもなります。隣り合う水引同士がするりと沿う感触や、色彩のグラデーションの豊かさ。そして没頭して作り上げた結びの美しさ。はじめて水引を何本か一緒に結んだ方が「これか！」と心が動く瞬間を一緒に味わえることに嬉しさを感じています。

アートの魅力にあふれた水引ですが、水引を「結ぶ」という丁寧で静かなリズムの中に、集中力や自信、達成感を育む力があると信じています。指先を使うことによるフィジカルな動きが、高齢者や子どもの認知機能の涵養に役立つと考え、プログラムを鋭意作成中です。ご興味のある方、またご協力いただける方、ぜひお待ちしています……！
