Hello, I’m Satoi, a mizuhiki artist based in Tokyo and New York.
I create pieces that bring mizuhiki, a traditional Japanese craft, into modern living—adding a gentle touch of Japanese essence to fashion, interior design, and everyday spaces.
Before discovering mizuhiki, I studied Japanese linguistics and worked in the broadcasting field, where I explored how to express thoughts and empathy with care, and how to shape meaningful communication with language. Through my experience living abroad, however, I became increasingly drawn to visual forms of expression. Since 2018, I have been offering mizuhiki workshops in both Japan and the United States, sharing its charm through cultural programs at schools, community spaces, and corporate events.
The time spent tying mizuhiki can be a lively moment filled with conversation and laughter among friends, or a quiet moment of reflection, pouring your thoughts into colors and shapes. There is the smooth feeling of the cords settling neatly side by side, the richness of their color gradients, and the beauty of a knot created with full concentration. It is always a joy to share that moment when someone tying mizuhiki for the first time suddenly says, “Ah, this is it!” as something clicks in their heart.
While mizuhiki is captivating as an art form, I believe that the gentle, quiet movements involved in tying mizuhiki have the power to nurture focus, confidence, and a sense of accomplishment. I also feel that the fine motor movements of the fingers can support cognitive development for both older adults and children, and I am actively developing programs with this in mind. 日本の伝統工芸である水引を現代の暮らしに取り入れ、ファッションやインテリア、日常の空間にさりげなく和のエッセンスを添える作品を創作しています。
水引に出会う前は日本語学を学び、放送業界での取材活動において思考や共感をどのように丁寧に伝えコミュニケーションを紡いでいくか、そんな言語を通しての表現を考える日々を送っていました。海外生活を通し、日本らしさを “見せて魅せる” 視覚表現に惹かれるようになり、2018年からは日本とアメリカの学校やコミュニティスペース、企業の文化交流イベントなどで多くの方に水引の魅力を伝える経験をさせていただいています。
水引を結ぶ時間は、仲間と楽しく会話を弾ませる賑やかな楽しいひと時にも、静かな空間で自分の心と向き合い、色や形に想いを込めるひと時にもなります。隣り合う水引同士がするりと沿う感触や、色彩のグラデーションの豊かさ。そして没頭して作り上げた結びの美しさ。はじめて水引を何本か一緒に結んだ方が「これか！」と心が動く瞬間を一緒に味わえることに嬉しさを感じています。
アートの魅力にあふれた水引ですが、水引を「結ぶ」という丁寧で静かなリズムの中に、集中力や自信、達成感を育む力があると信じています。指先を使うことによるフィジカルな動きが、高齢者や子どもの認知機能の涵養にも役立つと考え、プログラムを鋭意作成中です。ご興味のある方、またご協力いただける方、ぜひお待ちしています……！
